narrative "about" school, but many foundational pieces were composed
specifically as études (study pieces) for students, or as learning guides for
every developing pianist. Here is a sampling of pedagogical piano compositions.
Muzio Clementi’s Gradus ad Parnassum ("Steps
to Parnassus") is a massive collection of piano études designed strictly
to train students in classical technique.
J.S. Bach’s Minuet in G Major (BWV Anh. 114)
is a staple piece taught in early student repertoires around the world.
Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op. 15 (“Scenes
from Childhood”) depicts youth rather than the classroom, but these
short pieces evoke games, stories, and youthful discipline.
Frédéric Chopin’s Études (Op. 10 and Op. 25) transformed
mechanical school exercises into breathtaking, high-art performance pieces.
